To understand what judder is and how it happens, we must start from the beginning. When Blu-ray aspect ratio was in the news a few years ago was talk much about the resolution, which can easily be defined as the number of pixels that make up an image. Most people understand that the resolution is directly correlated to image quality, although many other factors also are involved. Today we can receive HDTV via satellite, for example. The resolution is then 720p or 1080i. There are two formats with individual strengths and weaknesses. 1080i offers the higher resolution but is interlaced, which may cause less good quality in fast moving. For sports and similar preferred because many 720p is a progressive format in which all lines are updated in one go.

Blu-ray is not limited by a narrow but essential to combine these two formats to both high definition and progressive signal: 1080p. So far so good but to complicate things, the 1080p, in turn, in different form. The early Blu-ray players always sent out in 1080p 60Hz which is synonymous with 60 frames per second. The reason for this is that the old TV format NTSC works great with 60Hz and the TV then just accept the standard of beyond 50Hz to PAL system in Europe uses. Now this is really not a problem when talking about sending TV produced in just 50 or 60Hz, and therefore can be reproduced with proper frequency on any picture viewer.

Although not yet available, some specific plans, however, Nokia is hopeful and says that the maximum staff will be on leave for up to three months. BBPF Developers Challenge Registration Now Open

DevCon is fastly approaching and with RIM's call for papers last week from developers the most recent news comes to us from the BlackBerry Partners fund where in which they have announced that registration for the BlackBerry Developer Challenge is now open for anyone wishing to participate.

16 finalists will be chosen from all the applicants. Finalists will each receive a prize package valued at more than $5,000 (USD) and be invited to compete for a grand prize package valued at over $100,000. Runners up don't walk away empty-handed either, with their prize worth more then $25,000. Over the 4 month challenge judges will be focused on the most compelling product or service, clearly defined value proposition and most importantly how it can be excecuted technically.

In the end, 4 finalists will be chosen at the end of each 'contest month' and the challenge is on to present in 5 mins their application and/or service to a panel of judges at the “BlackBerry Sweet 16" event, which takes place at the BlackBerry Developers Conference, November 9 - 11 in San Francisco. OK BlackBerry Storm followers, we've got some new news here. RIM's Founder and Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis was just on stage at D7 and told Walt Mossberg and the crowd that "SurePress is here to stay" (big ups to Engadget for live blogging). We had heard that SurePress would be a thing of the past on the next gen device, but haven't really known exactly would that would mean. We heard previously that TruePress could be the new name and that there would be some sort of physical feedback at work, but the early Storm 2 photos and review by Engadget showed a display that looked less than clickable. But according to the head honcho it sounds like we'll see SurePress in one form or another on the next Storm. Most people like the concept of seperating navigation from confirmation but in practice on the original Storm it tends to slow you down more than it aids you (especially while typing). It is still unsure what exactly SurePress will mean on the Storm 2 (be it a physical screen click or something under the screen that registers pressure or something entirely different) but with all the rumors flying around, we are sure the real answer will be known sooner than later. continue...

We've got no pics of the latter device, but it's being touted here as the "BlackBerry Bold portfolio evolution" and uses the same processor as the Bold. It's also got a HVGA touchscreen, QWERTY pad, quad-band GSM / GRS / EDGE, GPS, and WiFi. Want more? Evernote, the popular web clipping software, is now available for BlackBerry mobile phones as well in addition to iPhone and Windows Mobile.

With Evernote installed, you can create new text notes or edit existing ones, upload pictures (aka Snapshot note) or record voice memos (audio recording). You can also access your existing Evernote notes, search by keywords, filter by tags, or simply browse.

Since Evernote can easily sync notes across all devices, anything that you clip inside the BlackBerry will instantly become available on the web or your Mac / Windows PC.

Initially, Evernote for Blackberry was available for download only through the BlackBerry App World (under the Productivity & Utility category) but since the store is not available outside US or Canada, Evernote has now provided direct download links to the software as well.

Not even a few minutes after posting about T-Mobile getting the Onyx/Driftwood around September did I see a post by Engadget where they actually have a picture of the BlackBerry Onyx from the front!

Now that I can see it from the front I can say a few more things about it. It seems to me like the Onyx is a Curve 8900 with the QWERTY keypad from the Bold, and is 3G enabled making it part of the 9000 series. There is no Trackpad on the Onyx pictured above, but since this is a pre-production unit the actual production unit may have one.

Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm Receives New OS Update

Pimp My BlackBerry?

It looks like the people at Research in Motion, the creators of the BlackBerry Mobile devices, have taken a cue from Apple Computer and introduced the BlackBerry App World, a virtual destination for applications that will enhance your BlackBerry experience. As a long time Apple iPhone user, I was intrigued by this announcement and wanted to take a moment to look under the hood of this new service and check out applications I would love to have on my BlackBerry device, if I owned one.

The Scouting Report

I headed over to the BlackBerry App World website, thinking I would be able to view a littany of fresh applications, only to be surprised at the fact that you must first own a particular BlackBerry device to view the service. But not any old device will due. You must own a BlackBerry smartphone, running BlackBerry® Device Software version 4.2 or higher, to even be able to download the App World application to browse the wares. What do you do if you are a window shopper and not certain if you want to download this additional application? What if I am in a location where the network is overworked and my connection speed is not nominal or, like this never happens, you are in a dead zone?

I was immediately frustrated by this notion. Apple’s App store can be accessed via your iPhone, on the go, or through your iTunes application, when you are in front of your computer, and it works with both versions of the phone. Look, I understand that RIM is playing “catch up” in this field, but I would think they would’ve thought this one through. Limiting the ability to window shop for applications just to the device itself seemed antiquated and one dimensional. Plus, when I combine that with the number of online reveiws I’ve read regarding the instability of the App World application as a whole, I become even more perplexed.

Where are the apps?

But, I digress. I wanted to bring you a fresh list of noteable applications that would start you on your way. Unfortunately, I cannot. I did see that the usual suspects, such as Facebook and AOL Instant Messenger, have applications available that are free. But, I was more curious to see if there were any hidden gems by third party developers that you would find handy. The only two I have seen, so far, are a lite version of Skype, which will be availble May 2009, and Shazam, a song recognition application that I personally cannot live without on my iPhone.

If you are a music junkie who always want to know what song you are listening to, who the artist is and where you can purchase the track, this song recognition software is tailor made for you. Simply launch the application when you hear a track you would like more information on and let Shazam do the rest. And, within moments, you will have all of the information you need to grow that music collection. You can also share your information with your friends easily through the application. Head over to the official Shazam website for more information. There is a 60 day trial offer. After 60 days, the application is still free, but you will be limited to only certain functions within the application.

What to look forward to

There is a lot to be said for the ease of use and plug and play capabilities of the iPhone and the supporting application. Plus, the fact that the device can be used on either an Apple Computer or a PC makes it even more desireable. But ease of use has never been the case for the BlackBerry devices and the trend seems to be continuing with their App World application. I just get the feeling that not enough thought was put into how the end user would use, or would want to use, the software. And not being able to window shop for applications left me with a handicap. I am hoping there are handy apps for you to interact with your multitude of social networks like Twitter and Digg, or a great and stable RSS reader so you can stay up to date with vidagirl, but I just don’t know at this moment.

But, if you own a BlackBerry® smartphone, that meets the minimum system requirements, you simply need to download the BlackBerry App World application and you are on your way! Unfortunately, this is only available to customers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

The Call for BlackBerry 101 Article Ideas post we ran last week got a great response - over the weeks / months ahead you'll see a new burst of helpful how tos and guides hit the blogs that'll further build out the knowledge base in our existing lecture series.

One of the areas where readers expressed interest in learning more was in regards to the BlackBerry web browser. For a lot of new-to-BlackBerry owners it isn't readily clear as to how to get the most out of it. Back on New Year's Eve we posted a must-read article called BlackBerry Browsers Explained, which walked through the basics of the native browser (the differences between Internet browser, Hotspot browser, etc.). After knowing when and how to use each browser, the next step in becoming speedy is learning the shortcuts!

The BlackBerry is full of useful shortcuts, and the BlackBerry web browser is no exception. Some browser shortcuts overlap with others on the device as they should -- t for top, b for bottom and spacebar to scroll down the page in steps -- while others are more browser specific and sometimes a little less intuitive: h for the homepage, r to refresh, g to go to an address, s for options, k for bookmarks, u to hide the status banner at the top, i and o to zoom in and out. Pandora for BlackBerry Storm Updated

Pandora has been out for the BlackBerry for a bit but it didn’t support the large touch screen on the Storm. That’s a thing of the past as the latest version now runs just fine on the BlackBerry Storm, even though the Pandora site doesn’t say so yet.

Tired of having to turn your precious BlackBerry over to an attendant every time you hit your gym locker room? Sure it’s a bit later than the rumor mill had anticipated, but Sprint may finally have the answer for you. The 8350i is now available without that pesky 2 megapixel shooter. Pricing on the 8350i sans-camera is lined up exactly with the older version that includes a camera, albeit barely usable, at $149.99 after $100 mail-in rebate and a 2-year contract. As far as specs go, no need to go through all that; it’s an old school BlackBerry Curve with PTT and no camera. Oh and it has Wi-Fi just like the regular 8350i, which is nice. BlackBerry Season in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea only got into BlackBerry technology in February this year, thanks to Digicel, but one politician is already using this big-time to the max.

Bulolo MP Sam Basil is already using BlackBerry technology to take and email high resolution photographs as well as stories to the media from rural areas in his electorate.

This was epitomised during the recent conflict in Wau when he tooked and emailed photos as well as stories right from the scene to the newspapers.

BlackBerry Season in Papua New Guinea

This worked very much to the advantage of The National, because as there wasn’t any reporter available at the time to travel up to Wau, Mr Basil was a politician-cum-journalist.

He is arguably the first PNG politician to use BlackBerry technology in such a way and has already become the tech-savvy Digicel pin-up boy for this gadget.

I say tech-savvy because Bulolo, albeit a rural area, has over the last two years seen a communications revolution in which more people are using telephones and internet there because of their MP.

BlackBerry technology has been around the Westernised countries for some time now and was only introduced in PNG this year to cater for the needs of businessmen and professionals.
A first in the country, this means Digicel, which is still on 2.5 Generation System, is now using GPRS technology that supports e-mail, voice and text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing and other wireless information services.

GPRS refers to general packet radio service, a packet-oriented mobile data service available to users of the 2G-2.5G cellular communication system called global system for mobile communications (GSM), as well as in the 3G systems.

GPRS enhances 2G and 2.5 systems to work close to the performance of 3G networks.
With BlackBerry, the user can check Hotmail, update FaceBook, IM Friends on Skype, Google Talk, or read the news online.

BlackBerry, a wireless handheld device, is used by more than 20 million subscribers across the world.

“It is a mobile office for the dynamic professional,” was how John Mangos, Digicel PNG chief executive described their new offering.

This new product comes after the Digicel launched its mobile internet in Port Moresby.
However, the new service would be rolled out to other parts of the country in the coming months.

Subscribers with internet-capable handsets can access the web via their Digicel handset, starting in the National Capital District and Lae.

Digicel says it will roll-out BlackBerry and GPRS services across PNG in coming months.
“Blackberry will allow the users manage their business and online activities, while away from the desk, and on the road,” Mr Mangos said.

“Digicel has set another mobile telecommunications landmark for PNG, with the introduction of Blackberry.

“Now users will be able to work on the go, with their email and office functions on their Blackberry smart phone.

“Digicel believes this will add to the ease and efficiency of doing business in PNG, which would in turn boost overall economic productivity and development in this country.”

Digicel’s Blackberry roll-out comprises three handsets (pictured): the Bold (K1, 799); Curve (K1, 399); and Pearl (K1, 199) and are available to Digicel’s post-paid subscribers only.

Blackberry Silver has 20MB with monthly fee of K70; gold, 100MB (K155); and platinum, 500MB (K335).

Mr Basil, who was invited to the USA in January this year for the inauguration of Barack Obama, is a big fan of the man.

It took only a few seconds for Barack Obama to go from ordinary citizen to the most powerful man in the world - the 44th President of the United States.

Many believe that his understanding and use of social networking tools to reach voters gave him a distinct advantage over other candidates.

He is well known as a fan of technology.

He is an avid Blackberry user, the first president to air his weekly address via video websites and the first to have an official portrait taken with a digital camera.

The internet and technology are credited with helping Mr Obama win the presidency.
From social networking sites to blogs and from iPhone applications to text messaging, Mr Obama used the power of these hi-tech tools to get his message out, raise money, galvanise voters and get him elected.

Now some in the industry think it could be "pay-back time" as they looks to the country's first tech savvy President to do his bit to push technology into a new era.

"He is the first real president who seems to understand technology and the needs of the industry," said Tim O'Reilly, the man credited with coining the term 'web 2.0' and who is generally regarded as one of the industry's visionaries.

"The guy's my age," said commentator and founder of Wired magazine John Battelle.
"This guy grew up knowing what an apple is besides the thing you eat, and using e-mail and Twitter.

Mr Basil called me before leaving for Washington DC to attend the inauguration.
He wanted to set up a website of his electorate as well as one of his US-Government funded trip to attend the inauguration.

I told him that blogs were fast replacing websites as the fastest-growing means of mass communication in the world – now even replacing traditional media such as newspapers, radio and television - and that his best bet was to start up a blog.

I also told him that Mr Obama was hailed throughout his campaign and transition as a politician who makes clever use of technology to communicate his message.

After dinner, he hooked up his laptop, and I helped him to set up a blog for the Bulolo electorate and another for his trip to the USA.

He is, as far as I know, the first PNG MP to have a blog, as opposed to a website.

For matters of transparency and accesibility, Mr Basil has also listed down all his contact details, including email addresses and mobile phones, so that everyone can be in touch with him.

He has now gone a giant step forward with his BlackBerry.

Gone are the staid days of Mr Basil’s predecessors, replaced by a dynamic new means of communication reflective of the tech-savvy incumbent.

RIM to Make a BlackBerry Dedicated to U2?

The fact that Bono and his U2 have left Apple and joined RIM isn’t news anymore. But what got our attention lately was the possibility for RIM to make a special Blackberry dedicated to U2. Here’s what Bono himself said about RIM:

I’m very excited about this. Research In Motion is going to give us what Apple wouldn’t — access to their labs and their people so we can do something really spectacular.

Does that mean a new phone? Bono says that “you’re not far off.” A special edition U2 BlackBerry would be quite interesting but at this point we don’t have any idea if that is going to happen. BlackBerry Storm 2 coming in September, has WiFi

According to a source very close to the issue, Verizon has given the go for RIM to release the BlackBerry Storm 2 in September of this year. The followup to the groundbreaking Storm that was released last year as the first touchscreen Blackberry, SlashGear has been told that the new Storm 2 addresses one of the biggest criticisms of the first smartphone and of Verizon devices in general, in that it will support WiFi.

While we’re not able to name our source, we can say that we’ve no doubts regarding the veracity of their information. The source gave us their assurances that the Storm 2 would have WiFi, and would be an even better Pro-consumer device than the first Storm. We wonder if RIM and Verizon will make any changes to the touchscreen, a common point of complaint for the first-gen devices; comments he dropped lead us to believe WiFi isn’t the only thing RIM and Verizon have up their sleeve with the Storm 2.

The original Blackberry Storm debuted as Verizon’s challenger to the iPhone, remains one of their flagship devices. With the release of Blackberry App World, the Storm is in an even better position to make a dent in Apple’s market share. The launch of the Storm 2 with WiFi and an improved touchscreen could draw both consumers and business users alike in to Verizon.

How to get the most out of Twitter search

Lately i have caught myself using Twitter search almost as much as Google. It has become an important tool for finding news and information in areas that interest me. If, for some reason, you are not familiar with Twitter search, you can find it at search.twitter.com, but they have already announced they were integrating Twitter search with the main platform, so it seems like a good time to learn more about it.

The basics

Twitter search works pretty much the same as Google or any other search engine, you simply type in what you want to search for and Twitter will find all of the tweets that contain that keyword. A really cool thing about Twitter search is that, you can subscribe to the results in your feed reader, simply by clicking the RSS button in the upper-right hand corner of every result page.

Advanced features

If you want to refine your search with additional options, you can use a number of different operators to get better results. There’s a nice list of all the operators you can use with the search at search.twitter.com/operators. If you don’t want to type the operators, or if you simply prefer filling out a form, Twitter has put up a really nice page where you can literally see all of the different ways you can search Twitter. You can find advanced Twitter search features at search.twitter.com/advanced.

I will not go into detail of every operator, but will show you the most useful ones you should get comfortable with.

The hashtag is probably the most important function of Twitter search, and the most used too. Hastags are tags used to identify tweets related to a certain conversation. You can either use the hashtag feature of the advanced search or just type #tag into a regular Twitter search. For instance, if you type in #FollowFriday, you will get all the conversations about this topic.

Search for @reply to find replies to you or to find out who is talking about you. Just put the @ in front of your username in Twitter search and it will show you all the replies and conversations that mention your name. You can subscribe to this feed as well, helping you keep track of who is retweeting and replying to you.

The minus sign is very simple, but useful. Works the same as in Google or any other search engine. If your search brings up irrelevant results you can filter out the irrelevant results by using the minus sign.

Local search is where Twitter really shines. If you’re looking for something at a specific location, let’s say London, just search near:london and you will get all the results nearby.

Another great thing is search in time periods. This lets you narrow down your search to a specific timeline. To limit results to a certain timeframe, use the operators since: and until:. Format the dates as YYYY-MM-DD.

Conclusion

Well, Twitter is not the best search engine, but is one of the best tools for keeping on top of relevant news. Even if you don’t use Twitter, it can be a very useful search engine. It’s great to get blogging ideas too. Oh, and one more tip - searches are case insensitive, so don’t worry about how you type it - just be sure to spell it correctly. [source]

On Apr. 1, Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of Research in Motion (RIM), is expected to take the stage at the wireless industry's annual trade show in Las Vegas and open the virtual doors to a much anticipated new online store. BlackBerry App World will be chock-full of software programs created by outside developers that visitors will be able to download to their RIM phones.

It's the first of several major assaults by rivals on Apple (AAPL)'s fast-growing iPhone business. Apple has stoked demand for the device by offering thousands of software applications from independent developers through its App Store. Now, Nokia (NOK), Microsoft (MSFT), and Palm (PALM) plan to follow RIM with virtual software stores of their own this year. "There's going to be a significant counter-challenge to Apple," says Mike McGuire, analyst with researcher Gartner (IT).

Nokia, RIM, and others sell more phones than Apple. But Apple has leapt out to an early lead in transforming the mobile phone into a sophisticated computing device onto which people load their favorite software. The number of mobile phones that can browse the Web and handle other advanced tasks is expected to surge from 139 million last year to 295 million in 2010, according to Gartner. These so-called smartphones are on track to eclipse the 300 million-unit personal computer market. "This could make the PC wars of the 1980s look like small potatoes," says Trip Hawkins, chief executive of mobile game maker Digital Chocolate.

RIM may seem an unlikely contender in this fight. Its BlackBerry is often dismissed as the utilitarian, slightly boring alternative to the stylish iPhone. But RIM is taking aim at the one clear weakness in Apple's approach—the paltry profits for developers who create software for the iPhone. RIM plans to make the business more lucrative for developers, to lure them away from the House that Jobs Built. "RIM's strategy is defensive," notes Anil Doradla, an analyst with William Blair. "But based on RIM's track record, I'd give them high marks."

Nokia and blackberry the leading mobile manufacturers are in process of making deal where Blackberry (RIM) provide support to the Nokia latest devices. You may recall several months ago, just about the time the E66 and E71 were announced, that Nokia also revealed it would be discontinuing support for BlackBerry service on its S60-powered smartphones. This was a huge deal, and the post was one of our most popular for several months afterwards. However, in a recent Rueters interview, Tom Furlong, head of Nokia Messaging, let us know that RIM is preparing its own support for Nokia devices.

It’s been several months now since Nokia announced their new E71 and E66 devices, and while the announcement came as great news to S60 and Nokia fans, Nokia darkened their day by letting them all know that BlackBerry Connect was not going to be supported on Nokia devices any longer. Nokia’s explanation of course was that their devices and new email system they were working on (Nokia Messaging) was a much better email solution as it catered to all users, not just business users. In a recent interview with Tom Furlong, Nokia’s head of messaging, he stated that Nokia’s messaging service is up and running and people are using it but he also mentioned the following as well. That Lord of the Rings parody pretty much sums up Google Voice, which used to be known as GrandCentral. I’ve been registered with it for several years, but stopped using because I was waiting for Google to weave its magic. I’d almost forgotten about it until the Google Voice announcement. The Google magic is now woven.

Here’s an 10 point summary of what Google Voice is, what it means and why it changes the game.

It’s a Personal PABX Google Voice is a complete personal PABX which combines voice mail, call recording, call blocking (from people you don’t want calling you), call notification (via email or sms) and allows you to reduce all your phone numbers to a single number that you choose yourself (from an available list) and which will never change. You can add or delte any other numbers including hotel room numbers, or temporary number for when you visit aunt Meg. And by the way, the voice male is transcripted automatically so you can read it as an email. The voice to text translation is not perfect, but it works well enough unless you have a thick accent.
It’s a web based phone service. You’re sitting at your computer and want to phone someone. You got to Google Voice and click on someone’s ID in the address book and it rings them and rings you to complete the call. If you have a web site you can put a button on it and users can click the button enter their phone number and it will do the same thing - i.e set up a call.
Conferencing and Video Phone. Right now it doesn’t offer video calls, but Google does through Gmail. So how long before video phone is part of the service (should you want it)? It can’t be long. And by the way you can do conference calls on Google Voice so say goodbye to that conferencing service you use. No need, instant conferencing through Google Voice.
It’s free by any reasonable definition of the word. Currently it’s a US only service and it’s free for all calls in the US. It’s not entirely free because international calls cost (about 2 cents per minute for most countries), but that’s less than Skype calls and it’s a lot less (but still about 18 cents per minute) if they go to mobile phones.
Unified Communications - coming soon. You may have noticed that Google already has email and chat (with voice and video.) So get prepared for unified communications through Google. It’s not here yet. Google Voice gives you SMS and Gmail gives you email and chat. Unified communications and more sophisticated collaboration are a few steps away, but not available now.
Google has just one competitor in the UC space. The competitor is Skype with 400 million registered users and millions of active users. Google will not overwhelm Skype any time soon, just as it will not overwhelm Yahoo Mail any time soon. But I hate to say this Mr Skype, Google is gunning for you. There have been rumors that Google would acquire Skype and that might still happen on the basis of “buying the user base.” But if it doesn’t happen then Skype will be the competition. If you’re a telco and believe you can compete with Google, dream on. Google ate your breakfast long ago and even Googled up your lunch. If you think that any other vendors in the UC will be able to compete with Google you’re wrong. Google is not interested in the corporate space right now, so there is still space for other players, but right now it’s between Google and Skype for the consumer market. My money is on Google.
Google is a Telco. Google is already a telco by any reasonable definition of the term. Google has been spending heavily on communications. It has been buying up fiber and getting involved in the US Spectrum Auctions. It controls more network fiber than any other organization in the world. It isn’t that Google directly own a vast amount of fiber, just that they control it through agreements with network operators.
It’s about Integrated Telephony. You can think of Google Voice as a communications initiative, but it isn’t as divorced from what Google is planning as that. Google is looking to provide a complete cloud-based computing environment for the average Joe. The average Joe accesses the web, has a PC (or netbook), does a few office apps, watches YouTube videos, makes telephone calls and has a mobile phone. Joe, Google. Google, Joe. Google Voice is not about telephony it’s about integrated telephony.
The Google Dynamic is Bottom-up. Google is moving from the bottom upwards. If you think any of Google’s other assets (search, advertising, Google Apps, Chrome, the Android mobile platform, etc.) are unrelated to this, then wrong you are. Google is moving in the direction of: consumer market -> SOHO market -> SMB market -> the mid market -> the corporate market. Google is unashamedly going for the numbers. As Napoleon once said, “God is on the side of the big battalions.”
Google is the new Microsoft. Just in case you thought it was Apple, it isn’t. It’s Google. There’s a parallel to the time when Microsoft launched Windows 3.0. It quickly became obvious that Microsoft was out there on it’s own and IBM had no means of defending itself against the new power. Watch the rise of Google Voice and Google’s communications business. The same applies.

It has become a web-centric world. Netscape could have done far better than it did by camping out in the cloud and challenging Microsoft to do battle in that terrain. Instead Netscape marched confidently on to the desktop and was slaughtered in short order. Netscape did Google a great service. It convinced Microsoft that it had seen off the threat from the Internet, so as Google rose up, Microsoft never saw the danger. Now it’s too late.

Google's new Google Voice; what will be the future of VoIPs?

Google's new Google Voice has a few rough edges but -- for many users -- it could be a life changing experience.

The service, which is a relaunch of GrandCentral that Google bought in 2007, allows you to choose a local number which will simultaneously ring up to six phones such as your cell phone, home phone, office phone and the phone at that vacation home that most of us can only dream about. In addition to forwarding your calls, it also takes voice messages that you can listen to on the web, from a phone or read thanks to a new feature that transcribes voice messages and sends them as email and text messages.

If you have multiple phones, having a single number to reach them all can make you and your callers' lives a bit easier and it can save space on your business card by not having to list separate numbers. The concept is simple: people are trying to reach you -- not one of your phones -- and Google Voice lets you decide how to route the calls.

The simultaneous ring feature can also be used by groups. Team HOPE, a support network for families of missing children, gives callers a GrandCentral number that rings the phones of several staff members to be sure calls are always answered.

I've been using a very similar "simulring" feature on Vonage for several years and like the fact that I get to control where my calls are forwarded. Both Google and Vonage let your configure forwarding from the web but Google also allows you to assign a temporary forwarding number directly from the phone. That could come in handy if you suddenly find your cell phone out of range but have access to another number where you can be reached.

I am afraid that what will be the future of VoIPs like Vopium, Jajah, Truphone and others....???

Blackberry at MWC 2009

Dieter is on location in Barcelona this week attending the Mobile World Congress, and it seems he has managed to stick with Espresso and keep himself away from the Sangria as the stories are still coming in. Following up on his hands-on look yesterday at the BlackBerry Application Suite running on an HTC Touch Pro, Dieter has this to say today:

Sure, they have a booth where you can check out umpteen BB vendors, but the real action appears to be happening at BlackBerry's courtyard building, where they have a bunch of meeting rooms where a bunch of business people are learning a bunch about BES 5.0

The stakes are actually higher than you might think for RIM at MWC. Overseas, Nokia is far and away the dominant force and Microsoft does much better with Windows Mobile than they do in the states. If RIM wants to extend their enterprise dominace into Europe and beyond, they had better make sure they schedule plenty of meetings in this glass box.

BlackBerry with pink, pricey, and plenty of diamonds

While scavenging for pricey handsets to hang on the gilded walls at the Mansion, we luckily bumped into one Alexander Amosu, of Amosu fame. The Amosu brand is synonymous with gold, encrusted and dripping with gemstones, and most of all, pricey. In his bag of tricks we found three fully-kitted BlackBerry Bolds, a pink iPhone, and an iced Motorola Aura. If you lined them up on a table -- which, of course, we did -- you'd be looking at some 12 plus carats and a price tag somewhere up around 50k. Sure, we're normally harsh on these types of things, but seeing them up close, we could almost kinda get it. Huge sparkling gallery after the break, so if you have shades, now's the time to don them.

Interesting round up, now It seems that Twitter has made a rush as of late - especially with BlackBerry users. Twitter the most know and best practice social networking application services are available in the form of IM, SMS and WAP - but as every demanding BlackBerry user knows, a powerful easy to use app is the way to go for any mobile service.

CB reviews: Until recently, we were stuck with only a few Twitter applications for Blackberry devices such as TwitterBerry and BlackBird. Later down the road TinyTwitter came along, and then there was Twibble which was ported over from the N95. Research In Motion’s (RIM) at CES 2009 has bring the new eye catching product “Blackberry Bluetooth Visor Mount”. In CES 2009 where almost all the companies present the show specifically focusing their devices this product from RIM was a pleasant surpise., applications and services on display-stay tuned to the Mobile WorkHorse blog for more details–one product in particular caught my eye: The as-of-yet unreleased "Blackberry Bluetooth Visor Mount."

There aren’t too many details available on the new RIM offering, which clips onto your vehicle’s visor-in fact, it doesn’t even have an official name yet, hence the quotations in the last paragraph. But it’s expected to become available during the first of half 2009, according to Tenille Kennedy, the RIM PR representative who conducted my booth tour. The BlackBerry Bluetooth Visor Mount is similar to existing in-car Bluetooth speaker phones, but it also lets you stream music from your BlackBerry device to a vehicle’s stereo system via an FM frequency. Mobiado releases three new phones, charges a kidney for each

The Canadian phone manufacturer Mobiado has just released three new additions to its lineup of insanely-expensive phones. White and Red special editions to the 105EM model were unveiled as well as the brand new 105CLB. As usual for the company, exquisite looks, rare materials and sky-high price tags define the phones.

The 105EM Special Edition White of the Mobiado will be have a body made of burl wood inserted into a nickel-plated brass frame (dermatitis, anyone?). The screws are made of titanium and the buttons are made of pure sapphire crystal, hand painted with silver paint.

The new Mobiado 105CLB has been crafted from large pieces of sapphire crystal and printed from beneath with the silver Mobiado monogram. Its frame is manufactured from aircraft aluminum, polished and then again nickel plated. The unique battery cover is made of a single piece of sapphire crystal. Mobiado 105 CLB will be available in two flavors - White and Black.

All of the newly introduced Mobiado phones (and most of the previous ones as a matter of fact) support quad-band GSM and dual-band UMTS (850/2100MHz). They all have 2 megapixel snappers on board and 2" 16M color displays of QVGA resolution. Some of the other features include Bluetooth, 1GB of internal memory (expandable through the microSD card slot), micro USB as well as Nokia Series 40 5th edition UI.

There is no information regarding the availability or the pricing of any of the new handsets but if you are to purchase one of them you'll know where to get them (selling a kidney should do).

Two exciting new WinMo-devices were unveiled today by HP. Named HP iPAQ Data Messenger and HP iPAQ Voice Messenger, they both feature lengthy specs sheets and powerful CPUs. The Voice Messenger is running on the Standard edition of the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS, while the Data Messenger is getting the touch-screen benefits of the Professional version.

The HP Data Messenger comes in the slider form factor featuring a full QWERTY keyboard. It has a 2.81" QVGA touchscreen display capable of showing up to 65K colors.

HP Voice Messenger is a bar-shaped phone with a 20-key Blackberry-esque QWERTY keyboard. It has a more modest 65K color 2.4" display of QVGA resolution. A noteworthy feature of the Voice messenger is its relatively compact body standing at 114 x 50 x 13.6mm and weighing only 107g in contrast to the 160g of the Data messenger.

Both devices support tri-band (900/1900/2100 MHz) UMTS (with HSDPA) and quad-band GSM, making them capable of worldwide roaming. Some of the other features they share are integrated GPS (with A-GPS support), Wi-Fi and 3 megapixel autofocus camera. Both devices are powered by a 528 MHz Qualcomm CPU and have 128MB of SDRAM.

Touchscreen BlackBerry Storm finally unveiled

After months of rumors, the Stormthe first-ever touchscreen BlackBerry is finally official, and it's set for Verizon Wireless (exclusively, for now) later this fall. Read on for the details.

Verizon hasn't coughed up a hard-and-fast release date for the Stormnor any pricing details, for that matter but this much we do know: It'll pack in dual-mode CDMA and GSM radios for full-on world calling, 3G access (both EV-DO Rev. A and HSPA), GPS (along with turn-by-turn directions), Bluetooth (including the A2DP profile for stereo Bluetooth headsets), and a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash and autofocus.

Measuring 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.55 inches and weighing in at about 5.5 ounces, the Storm (which is also set to arrive in Europe through Vodafone) looks to be roughly the same size as an iPhone or the upcoming T-Mobile G1, so it should be reasonably pocketable.

The centerpiece, of course, will be the Storm's 480 by 360-pixel, 3.25-inch glass display, which will support multitouch (good for two-finger gestures, a la the iPhone). Even better, though, is a feature that RIM calls "ClickThrough": a design that lets you "distinctly feel the screen being pressed and released with a gentle click" for a "highly intuitive experience." Sounds promising, but whether the Storm's display actually delivers the tactile experience that's missing on the iPhone and the G1 remains to be seen (or felt, I guess); I look forward to trying it out in person. In addition to the multitouch display, the Storm will also come with an ambient light sensor, along with an accelerometer that'll automatically turn the screen when you hold the phone sideways. Speaking of which: When it comes to entering text, holding the Storm in a landscape view will give you a full QWERTY touch keypad, while in portrait mode you'll get a SureType keypad (or the same layout as on a BlackBerry Pearl).

Naturally, messaging will doubtless be one of the Storm's strong suits. Expect full-on BlackBerry e-mail support, complete with push e-mail and access to POP and IMAP e-mail servers. Also on board: SMS, picture and instant messaging.

The Storm will also come with full-on Office document editing including support for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents courtesy of DataViz Documents to Go. Of course, plenty of other BlackBerry applications are already available, and there's word that a branded BlackBerry store is on tap, similar to Apple's App Store and the Android Market.

Besides its 3.2MP camera, the Storm is set to arrive with full HTML Web browser (double-tap to zoom, tap and slide to scroll), a video and music player, with Verizon promising smooth, full-screen video playback. There's also a 3.5mm jack for your earphones, 1GB of internal storage, and a microSD expansion slot for another 16GB of flash memory.

All in all, sounds like a formidable package, although something's missing if you look carefully: Wi-Fi. Ugh.
